only to stimulate your mind to discover basic alternatives

The Problem came to me in the mail one morning:

"I just discovered that I am pregnant and have no insurance. Was denied from Kaiser in Febuary after a miscarriage in January. Need insurance desperately. Lower the price the better, thanks."

My response reflects years of experience:

Good Morning:

I'm afraid your situation might be pretty bleak. At this stage of the game every real nsurance company I know of will treat this as PREexisting.  I stress the word "real" because there are so many companies out there masquerading as insurance companies that aren't.

It probably doesn't help any to know that you aren't alone.  I'll deal with the most positive recourses you might take, then proceed to lesser permutations.

Many people have come to the Insurance Roundup Roundup with coverage problems none of the regular insurance resources could help them with -- pregnant, overweight, pre-existing conditions, and other problems too.  The first question I want to ask you is ARE YOU SURE you are uninsurable?   For example.. Have you checked out CHIP coverage in your state to see if you are eligible there?

If the situation is such that you are desirous of giving up the baby for adoption, call 1 800 557 6517 for physical and medical assistance.

I don't know if this applies to you or not, but since some male is probably half way responsible for your pregnancy you should contact him and his parents for the assistance you deserve.

If the family is irresponsible, go to your boyfriend's insurance, and contact his employer.

If you are underage, file a complaint at the District Attorney's Office against the male if he is of legal age,
or against his family if he too is underage.

Receiving Hill-Burton Free or Reduced Cost Care:  Each facility chooses which services it will provide at no or reduced cost. The covered services are specified in a notice which is published by the facility and also in a notice provided to all persons seeking services in the facility. Services fully covered by a third-party insurance or a government program (e.g., Medicare and Medicaid) are not eligible for Hill-Burton coverage. However, Hill-Burton may cover services not covered by the government programs.

Volunteers in Health Care staff have prepared the following list of links useful to those serving the uninsured.

Check with WIC to see if you qualify.  WIC is effective in improving the health of pregnant women, new mothers, and their infants. A 1990 study showed that women who participated in the program during their pregnancies had lower Medicaid costs for themselves and their babies than did women who did not participate. WIC participation was also linked with longer gestation periods, higher birthweights and lower infant mortality.

#9: Call on your family for assistance, then on your local religious leader

#10: If you are a self-employed individual you may claim a special deduction for health insurance on your form 1040 of 45% of amounts you pay during the taxable year. You may be able to use this information as a means of proving to relatives or doctors that you can pay back their loan.

#12: Contact your state's Department of Insurance ( http://www.talewins.com/Life/res.htm ) and file a complaint on the original insurance company which dropped you.

#13: HIPAA ( Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 ) only covers group insurance, while employers with less than 20 employees are not required by law to offer COBRA. If either of these are applicable, contact your employer, or former employer as the case may be.

#14: As a last resort, Sign up with one of the companies here.

It is a strange thing that when an insurance company denies coverage that people will fight tooth and nail with everyone, everyone except the insurance company.

To the edicts from this entity we all meekly bow,
and seek redress by meekly complaining to others.
